A faculty-alumni collaboration is resulting in a new brew to be released next week during Spring Break. Penn College brewing & fermentation science grad Devin (Shellhammer) Smith, head brewer at Clarion River Brewing Co., asked her former instructor, Timothy L. Yarrington, to partner on crafting a traditional British beer.

A brewer who graduated from Pennsylvania College of Technology’s brewing & fermentation science major in 2024 has captured two medals in the prestigious Denver International Beer Competition. Devin (Shellhammer) Smith, head brewer at Clarion River Brewing Co., won a silver in the British Brown Ale category for her Leatherwood beer and a bronze in the Belgian Tripel category for her Liquid Long Johns brew.

Representatives from Penn College’s brewing & fermentation science major were among those cheering summertime at the Selinsgrove Brewfest, held July 20 near downtown Selinsgrove. "It's great to have the opportunity to present student products to a large number of beer enthusiasts, as well as beer-curious folks,” said instructor Timothy L. Yarrington. “I welcome any opportunity to let people know about our brewing program and the successes of our grads."

A new “ingredient” was added to the brewing & fermentation science capstone with the addition of an informal tasting session in Le Jeune Chef Restaurant and the major’s lab, both located in the Hager Lifelong Education Center at Penn College. The gathering was attended by the graduating students’ families and friends, industry professionals, brewing alumni, and college employees.

The delicious duo of beer and food was explored at the first “Cooking with Class: Meet the Brew Masters” event, held recently in Le Jeune Chef Restaurant on Pennsylvania College of Technology's campus. The evening featured a reception, a tour of the college’s brewing & fermentation science lab, and a three-course dinner paired with beers provided by New Trail Brewing. Proceeds from the gathering are supporting the brewing & fermentation science major.
